Beautiful Chaos

My post title comes to you courteous of my daughter, Tess.  We’ve just returned home from a weekend at one of my favorite places on earth: the Oregon Coast.  Beautiful Chaos was how she described our stunning surroundings during our last walk on the beach.

We giggled and squealed A LOT trying to get this shot without getting wet.

And we had some much needed family time together.

Because of our recent trip, I thought it might be a fun time to share some pillows that I made from vintage map textiles that I picked up at Cannon Beach.

A while back, Martha Stewart Living did a feature on decorating with vintage map textiles. 18th Century Tea Towels were originally used for drying fine china.  However, cotton printed tea towels gained popularity in the late 40′s and 50′s and those with maps are still sold as fun souvenirs.  I really like this “old school” look; for some reason it reminds me of my grandparents… most likely, because they often collected things like this from their travels.

The first one is a linen napkin of Washington & Oregon by Moda Home… I LOVE Moda’s line of fabrics! The colors are a bit more muted and will work well in our family room.

The second is a kitchen towel of the State of Oregon; vibrant and fun! They are both really cute, but I want to have them in separate rooms.  This one is perfect for our formal living room.

Sewing pillows is incredibly easy and these ones were no exception.  I wanted to keep these simple and let the print speak for itself.  I opted out of any welting or decorative trim.  I used some left over faux suede to back each pillow.

This project came together quickly after cutting the fabric to 20″ squares and machine stitching them together.  Once the pillow form is inserted, I normal hand stitch the opening closed.  However, since this was for our home, I wanted to see how Steam-A-Seam 2 would handle.  It was, in a word: Amazing!

I pressed the edges which warmed the fabric and allowed me to apply the fusible web strip. I then carefully covered it with the adjoining fabric and ironed again for 15 seconds.  Done! If you use Steam-A-Seam, take care to not get it on your iron.  Trust me… it’s not pretty.

The first pillow has had lots of love in our family room.

The second pillow is a great addition to our window seat.

And if we ever create a rock band, we can call it Beautiful Chaos.  This can be the cover of our first album.

Blogging & the Portland Home & Garden Show

On Wednesday, I went to the Blogging Seminar at the Portland Home & Garden Show and had the best time. The PHGS included this group photo on their Facebook Page which made me laugh. That’s my arm on the far left… just my arm.

Here’s a better one of all of us… yay!

John & Sherry Petersik from Young House Love led the blogging seminar and I’m so grateful to have been included in it. They shared a ton of great information about blogging.

If you haven’t had an opportunity to read Young House Love, I highly recommend it. They are a home, DIY, decor and life blog that is beautiful and informative. Also, they are two of the most authentic people you could meet… on their site AND in person. What you see is what you get. And they’re adorable too!

They were sweet and generous with their time and with sharing what they’ve learned over the last 4+ years of blogging. Not only did I leave with tons of notes, I was completely encouraged to follow my passion, be true to myself and give the process of blogging time.

They wrapped the discussion with autographed postcards and photos with attendees.

Definitely an inspiring afternoon!

Self Doubt & Other Annoying Obstacles

Last Friday felt a bit like Christmas around here. I received rug samples for our studio remodel. (The story on that I’m looking forward to sharing soon.)

Some vendor samples arrived for my husband’s business that we were super excited to see. Tyson is an incredible illustrator and I’ve included a link to his website in my sidebar, if you’re curious.

The packages continued to surprise us when Tyson’s new watch band for his nano arrived… interestingly enough, one that he’d been trying to decide on since, well, Christmas.

We even had a huge meal, where we served salad to 17 hungry high school student as a part of my son’s youth group progressive dinner. This is such a cool group of kids, it was so fun to host them and be a part of their evening.

But hands down, my favorite moment of the day was when I found out that I had won entrance to the Blogging Seminar at this years Portland Home & Garden Show. You see, I’m really new to the blogging community and I’m not a writer by nature. So feeling compelled to put this blog together is WAY outside of my comfort zone. In fact, I almost didn’t even submit my blog to the contest.

When I originally heard about the seminar, it was listed as a private event; by invitation only. I was a bit discouraged, but at that point, my blog was just an idea on paper, so yeah… how disappointed could I be. I shrugged off the idea of going to the seminar and got started on Storypiece. But then last week, I discovered that you could enter to win a spot thru the PHGS Facebook page. At that point, I only had 3 entries. Should I even try? Would they even take it as a serious entry? Tyson was very encouraging and told me I really only needed to have one post for it to be a blog. So I did it. I sent in the submission. And I got in!! I think the good folks at the Portland Home & Garden Show invited everyone who submitted an entry on their Facebook page, but I don’t care… I GOT IN!!!

If I had listened to the doubting voice in my head, I wouldn’t be going to the seminar this Wednesday. I wouldn’t be getting to meet John and Sherry from Young House Love who will be a part of the event. If I had listened to the “maybe I shouldn’t”, I wouldn’t be getting the opportunity to meet with other bloggers in Portland who have a love of home decor and design like I do; who are writing about it and doing it well. If I had listened to the fear, I wouldn’t be pursuing something that I truly believe in… learning and writing about the things that make a home unique and interesting.

So even though I don’t feel like writing is my gifting and I’m still trying to find my voice… and I need to add a logo and get a new camera for taking better photos… and even though I’m living outside of my comfort zone… I’m loving every minute of it! This is becoming quite the journey and I can’t wait to see what’s next. If nothing else, it should make for an interesting story.

Vintage Newsprint

In my last post, I mentioned that the chess set we recently received was wrapped up and stored away.  In fact, I’m pretty sure it went untouched for numerous decades.  When we began unwrapping the pieces, we came across one page dated October 6th, 1971… 7 months after my husband was born.

With each unwrapped chess piece there was equal parts excitement over the figure and the newsprint that it was wrapped up in.

We found ads for cars…

And more cars.

And if you’re looking for a Pre-Owned Mercedes…

There were ads for furniture.

And there were countless sports articles.

All of the paper is crumpled, but unfaded and easily legible.  So what to do with it?  It’s really too cool to just toss.  The wheels are turning, but I’m up for any suggestions.  Let me know what you think in the comments section.
