Picnic in the Park

Oregon in the fall is my absolute favorite!  Not only is it time to bust out the boots, but the entire scenery becomes crazy beautiful.  The air is crisp and clean and the colors are truly amazing.  We live twenty minutes from downtown Portland, but only a stones throw from gorgeous farmland that is fun to visit in the fall.

However, months of rain will be hitting us soon and we are eager to take full advantage of the outdoor activities before that happens.  This includes an outing with this vintage piece.

Not too long ago, I told you about the heirloom plates that Tyson and I brought home when we helped go through his grandparent’s things.  We also ended up with their picnic basket.

The basket is in stunning shape for being decades old and aside from needing to be cleaned, it is ready for a picnic in the park.

It’s been stored in a musty basement for some time and Tyson’s sister recommended that I clean it with a vinegar cleaning solution and a little time in the fresh air.

First I vacuumed as much of the dust as I could from the weave.  Then I spritzed and wiped down the entire basket with a (50/50) vinegar and water solution.  I was careful to be gentle as there are a few spots where the wicker is beginning to fray.  I also made sure not to saturate the basket and risk it warping in the sun.

The cleaning technique worked like a charm!

All set for a trip to the park.

We don’t know if Tyson’s grandparents loved picnics in the park or how often they went, but the fact that they owned such a stylish piece for a lunch date in the sunshine seems just like them.  We are looking forward to making some memories of our own with it.

Are you a picnic kind of person?  What are some of your favorite fall activities? Have you been playing outside before winter is upon us?

You’re so lucky to be able to not only HAVE seasons but to enjoy them. Oregon is beautiful but I especially love the fall. I probably never mentioned that my mom lives in Corvallis, my cousin in Eugene and Richie’s childhood best friend in Portland. We absolutely have EVERY reason to visit. Shame on us for not soaking up all that beauty (the state and the people!)

Love the picnic basket!!! It really IS in amazing shape and now it’s so clean and ready for a fun afternoon. Tessa looks too cute in her little dress, flower in her hair and picnic basket. Picturesque!! What a special piece to have. I think we ALL need to go on more picnics these days. 🙂

Look at stylish Tessa rocking that photo! I am not a big picnic person but I love Fall and will soak in any time outdoors during Fall even more so than summer b/c it’s so short and it’s beautiful to look at all the trees to stay indoors.

      I’m SO technical!! 😉

The basket had such a fun detail that I wanted to capture, but video didn’t seem like the right thing.

The molding in the background is the window seat that Tyson built. One of these days I’ll get a post written about that story… There was a carjack involved at one point.

Hi Terry. Unfortunately, I’m not sure of the financial value for vintage picnic baskets and only have information on the care and maintenance of these antiques.

Thanks for stopping by and best of luck!

Thanks for reading. Please leave a comment... I'd love to hear from you!
