One of the things that I don’t often discuss on Storypiece is my love for a good deal. In my pre-blogging days, I made our dollars stretch by couponing and watching for the best deals possible. Couponing is a big time commitment, however, when the economy tanked 8 years ago and finances were tight, learning how to get bags of groceries for just a couple of bucks was a major blessing.
Now that I’m working outside the home, I don’t have as much time to coupon, but I still do what I can. And when it comes to large purchases (like furniture) I always look for the best deals possible.
When researching dining room furniture, I was truly surprised by the cost. Since we had inherited our last set, this is the first time I’ve shopped for one and dining tables alone can be as expensive as some major appliances. Holy cow… I had no idea!
After waiting so long for an update, I really wanted new (no thrift store or Craigslist finds), but I needed to stick within a budget.Making over our dining room was going to take some creative shopping.
Here our my top 5 tips for saving big on your next furniture purchase:
Be Style Loyal, Not Brand Loyal
Purchasing an entire set at one time can be really pricey. I mentioned in our dining room reveal that buying pieces from a variety of retailers kept things from being too matchy-matchy. It also allowed me to save by being loyal to the style I was going for without having to buy everything at one time or from one store.
Because I knew the style and dimension of the pieces I wanted, I was able to be patient and wait for the best deal possible. I spent weeks searching a variety of sites. The dining table I ultimately purchased has been discontinued and I was able to pick it up for over half off. We had to wait a few weeks for it to be trucked in from the warehouse and delivered, but the savings made it worth it.
Many retailers often allow you to use coupons on sale items, but you need to read the fine print to be sure. We found our dining room seating at 20% off. I was then able to add a 15% off coupon to the sale price for even bigger savings.
Pick up vs. Delivery
This may not always be an option, but when available it can be helpful. We chose to ship to the store and pick up our dining room seating ourselves. It took both of our cars and there was some assembly required when we got home, but it saved us almost $200.
Purchase Through A Cash Back Site
There are several cash back sites that allow you to earn rebates (a percentage of your purchase) when you shop online. You will want to do some research to find out which site is right for you, but my personal favorite is Ebates. Ebates is a great source for finding online deals (like free shipping) and you can join for free with my affiliate link by clicking HERE.
BONUS TIP: Always follow the Golden Rule and BE KIND. Having worked in retail and now having kids that do, I’ve seen first hand customers forgetting their manners when making a purchase and things are not going according to plan. Please be kind to the people you are buying from and remember that in the end it’s only stuff.
