I have the incredible good fortune to not only be close to my mom, but also to have an amazing mother-in-law. And even better… they get along as well which makes for great family time. Last December, my mom moved to Portland and ever since, family gatherings have been super fun when the mom’s get together. Of course, this makes me all kinds of giddy thinking about Mother’s Day. Honoring two awesome moms with brunch at our house is going to be such a lovely way to celebrate motherhood.
Once the family agreed on the menu, I got down to the business of planning the decorations, gifts and table setting. I wanted something bright, sunny and would make the moms feel extra pampered. The result is a cheery backdrop with paper fan decor for Mother’s Day.

- A variety of scrapbook paper (12×12) – 2 sheets for large rosettes, 1 sheet for smaller rosettes
- Hot glue or other strong adhesive
- Large roll of craft paper (similar)
- Chipboard Letters (similar)
- Krylon gold Glitter Blast spray paint
How to Spray Paint Chipboard Letters
You’ll want to select letters for your backdrop in a word or phrase for the occasion. “Mom” was a little small and I have a special fondness for the word “Cheers”. It’s just so…. well… cheery!
Measure how large you will want your backdrop paper and layout your letters on it. Then spray the letters evenly. Be sure to cover the surrounding space as well as the letters themselves.
If you’ve never worked with Krylon Glitter Blast paint, it seriously redefines the word FUN. It’s not like painting with gold. It’s like painting with glitter and it has great coverage.
After your letters have dried, carefully remove them. Now you have a banner with negative space letters AND freshly painted chipboard letters to use for another occasion. This is my kind of DIY. Work once with results for TWO projects!
How to Make Simple & Easy DIY Paper Fan Decor for Mother’s Day
Beginning on one end, fold your paper in one inch sections accordion style. This doesn’t have to be perfect. Just eyeball about 1 inch and start folding.
Fold in Half and Secure
Once you have two paper accordions, fold each in half and glue together in the center creating a paper fan.
You can use double sided or regular tape, but I found for the heavier stock paper, a hot glue gun works best.
Glue Together Paper Rosette
When you have two paper fans completed, hot glue together the long ends for a circular rosette.
For smaller rosettes, accordion fold one sheet of scrapbook paper and cut it in half. Then complete the remaining steps for making paper rosettes.
Hang your backdrop and attach paper fans with hot glue for pretty Mother’s Day decor.
The table is getting set and I can’t wait for the mom’s to arrive!
