You Light Up My Life

It’s true!  You all really, really do light up my life.

And because of that, I’ll spare you the video footage of me belting out this Debby Boone classic… even if I do know all the words.  It’s just that there’s a long running joke in our home that it’s important to “pick a key” when singing.  My feelings would be hurt if it wasn’t so true.  But one of these days I’m taking voice lessons because my inner Christina Aguilera cannot be contained.

Anyhoo… where was I?  The real reason for this post… lighting and how you guys rock.

Now that the table is finished, I am on a hunt for new lamps.  And I’ve been searching the spectrum for them.  Marshall’s, Target, Lamps Plus… they are either incredibly expensive, out of stock or I can only find one lamp when I need two.  However, yesterday I made a last minute run to Home Goods and they did not disappoint.

I wasn’t sure if they would be too big for our new console so I decided to bring them home to see how they look.

I LOOOOVE them so.  However, I do recognize that I may be losing my objectivity due to the pretty blue glass. Tyson thought they looked a little big.

So like any good blogger, I put them on Instagram and Twitter to get public opinion.

And thanks to all that weighed in, I received lots of feedback to consider.  The overall consensus is that they are gorgeous and yes they are big, but once the wall is filled in with art or whatever we are hanging there, it will look balanced.

This got me thinking about styling an area with lamps and art.  I’m curious what you think.

Mixing Lamps - When lamps are on the same buffet or table do you think they should match?

Lamps Plus | Storypiece.net

When I was having a hard time finding two lamps within my budget, I was considering this option. I think my first thought is they should match, but I really like the possibility of them being different.

Lamp Height/Shape - Do you find that you have a favorite style?

I suppose that it depends on the space, but through this process I’ve found I’m drawn toward longer, leaner lamps.  I like gourd shaped or a boxed style, but I swoon over a taller lamp.  Who knew?!

Art Spacing - Do you hang your art between or behind your lighting?

My original intent was to hang the art behind the lamps.  If I keep the blue glass ones, I’ll need to hang the art between them.  That’s not a bad thing, it’s just different than I had planned.

Deciding On Lighting | Storypiece.net

All of these points are a matter of personal preference and things I hadn’t considered before.  What about you?  Does an item from this list stand out to you as something that you feel very strongly about?  Is there something that I’m not considering?  Have you faced a similar design dilemma before?  How did you resolve it?

My IKEA Wish List

Last week, I went to IKEA to pick-up the wooden KNUFF organizers that I mentioned here. When I went, I promised myself I was only going for the one item.  Get in, get out.  I know how foolish that sounds to some of you, but I promise, I had good intentions.  However, much like Target, IKEA has a way of sucking you in and you slowly find yourself wandering the aisles wondering if you need another pair of Swedish salad tongs.

So I started taking note of things that caught my eye to share with you here.  A couple of items I purchased, but most of them are now on my IKEA Wish List.

Heart Shaped Ice Tray

IKEA Ice Tray

My friend, Alex at Northstory does amazing things with shaped ice trays.  Where I think “just add water”, she sees the possibilities of so much more.  You can see some of her fun ideas here and here.  For .99 cents, I knew it was time to take a page from Alex’s playbook pick up this little heart ice tray.

Cute Daisies

IKEA Daisies

I mentioned in my Mother’s Day post that I love the simple elegance of daisies.  I even keep some permanently in my workroom.  However, these guys are the perfect size for a small vase and at $1.49, they make an easy home accent.

Springform Pan

IKEA Springform Pan

This is one of the items I truly regret not getting.  This springform pan has heart shape embellishments on the bottom and it has an insert to easily convert it into a bundt pan style.  2 for 1 and all my future Picaken problems would be solved.

Plants & Lace Pots

IKEA Plants

IKEA Lace Trimmed Plant Pot

I passed these up the first time I saw them in the store, but when I hit the second display, I knew they would come home with me.  There’s something about the lace like trim and the playful little leaves that I love. I’m not sure where in our home this set will end up, but everywhere I place it, it just makes me smile.

Bedspread & Cushion Covers

IKEA Alina Bedspread and Cushion Covers

I love grey and red together so when I came across a display of this red bedspread set next to the same set in grey, they immediately caught my eye.  If we were in the market to replace our summer coverlet in our Master Bedroom, I think this would be the perfect option.  It’s understated by being just one color, but the decorative stitching keeps it from being boring.

Akerkulla Fabric

IKEA Akerkulla Fabric

If I hadn’t already done Tessa’s desk chair in IKEA’s Janette fabric, Akerkulla would be my fabric of choice.  I really like the playfulness of the pattern and the simple grey color allows the pattern to be the star of the show.

Leather Chair

YSTAD Leather Chair

I SO wanted this YSTAD chair to come home with me.  It would be perfect for the family room.  Not too big, not too small, just right!  It was in their “As Is” section and marked down to $450.00.  Someone in Portland has a great new chair.

Mini Globe Lights

IKEA Mini Globe Lights

This little impulse buy has left my family asking “what’s up with that?”  I thought they’d be cute out on the patio table when we BBQ this summer.  I picked up the aqua colored ones and they look like little eggs (or aliens… I can’t decide) next to our owl candle holder.

Have you had any success during a recent trip to IKEA?  Do you get sucked in by the wonders of their store?  See anything here that you would add to your IKEA wish list? Let me know which are your favorites or something that you might already own.

Spring Pinterest Challenge Preview

Recently, Sherry Petersik (from YHL) and Katie Bower (of Bower Power) announced their Spring Pinterest Challenge would be this week and my little creative heart grew three sizes that day.  Of all the link parties in blogland, this one is by far my favorite.  It really brings out some amazingly talented people and it pushes me to try my hand at something new that I’ve been eyeing on Pinterest.

Pinterest Challenge - Spring Edition

And this challenge came at the perfect time; I knew exactly what I wanted needed to do.

You know those projects that you do and you think “YEAH… that’s so AWESOME!”, but then over time you start thinking “yeah… not so much.”?  The project I decided to tackle was a lot like that.  Something I liked on initial application, but it hasn’t really stood the test of time.  And something that every time I walked by, was really starting to bum me out.  It was time to change ALL that.

Want a little preview of tomorrow’s post?

I thought you might… so I updated another “blast from the past post” in preparation for what’s ahead.

Chalkboard Montage | Storypiece.net

You can click on the link here to see how I took an old cabinet door and turned it into a chalkboard for our laundry room.

This is the fourth post I ever wrote and I’m so glad I went back and updated it.  Not only does the post page load so much faster, the original photos were really blurry.  The lighting still isn’t great in them, but the image quality has vastly improved.

Need another hint?

Well… let’s just say this little board got a great big design improvement.

Welcome to Storypiece

How’s that for a tease for tomorrow’s post?  Are you participating in the Spring Pinterest Challenge? Is there something hanging around your place that you once loved, but have grown weary of?  Let me hear all about it in the comments.

Need more Pinterest Challenge fun?  Check out some of my other projects here, here, here and here.

Family Style Living Bling

Winning stuff is pretty much a day maker in my book.  We have friends that literally win just about every contest they enter.  They insist it’s because they enter them all the time so the odds are in their favor.  I think some people just have amazing luck like that.  I don’t tend to be one of those people, but our friends are so sweet, I find myself truly thrilled whenever they win something new.

All that to say, you can imagine my astonishment when this popped up in my email last week.

Family Style Living Giveaway Winner | Storypiece

Winning a giveaway is a day maker for sure!

And even though they had no idea I was going to do this, I’m just too excited to not share about the ladies that held the giveaway as well as the actual item I won.

Family Style Living is hosted by Pam and Lindsey.  They are a mother/daughter team who live in different states and started a blog as a way to stay connected.  How cool is that?! As someone who is particularly close to her mom, I find this to be such a neat way to share life across the miles.

Pam & Lindsey | Family Style Living

I’ve mentioned on this blog that I’ve done a little quilting, but I’m not a “true quilter”.  That’s because of people like Pam.  Let me just show you Pam’s latest creation:

Fox Quilt by Family Style Living

Pam takes quilting to an art form.  The detail and planning in this quilt is incredible.  That stitching is just… wow!

I don’t think I’ll ever have the vision or patience for this level of quilting, but I serously admire those that do.  You can read more about the process that went into Pam’s foxy creation here.

So about that giveaway I won….

Pam is also a jewelry designer and has her own Etsy store which inspired FSL’s giveaway. And I am now the proud owner of one of her fun pieces.

The ornate heart is something I would buy for myself and the color is perfect as we head into summer.

So let me further promote these gals by saying if you are still needing to pick-up a Mothers Day gift (or if you’re a mom and want to send a suggestion to some of the people still needing to shop for you) please check out PeeGee Jewelry.  They have a wide variety of pieces that are truly lovely and reasonably priced.

Have you ever won a blog giveaway or contest? Have you finished shopping for your favorite mom?  Are you leaving hints for family members that still need to finish their shopping?

As a side note, it’s really fun receiving something in the mail from a blog you follow.  I’m hoping you can experience that by offering my own giveaway soon!
