Goal Setting for 2016

This past weekend Tyson and I spent time together dreaming and planning our goals for the year. It’s cute to think that we knocked it out in a weekend, but truth be told, both of us have been mulling over life for the last few months and only now tried to wrangle our thoughts onto paper.

For me it meant a lot of time spent reflecting on this blog.

When I started Storypiece almost 4 years ago (yikes!) I had no idea that it would become something that I would find myself so passionate about. It was fun and awkward and challenged me to get out of my comfort zone. All really good stuff, but over the last few months it has become so much more.

As we kick off the new year, I thought it might be a time to fill you in on what’s on my heart and has ultimately become my vision for what’s to come.

Encouragement – Right after I finished the Pixelgarden Sign last fall, I met some girlfriends for a night out at a wine and paint studio. If you haven’t had a chance to participate in one of these classes, I highly recommend it. It was not only super fun, but it was incredibly eye-opening.

I had just completed a daunting personal challenge and I was so excited to have a low pressure evening with friends. I couldn’t screw it up and even if I did… who cares! But as I painted and sipped my wine, I heard over and over from the participants around me, “mine’s not good”, “look how lame my painting is”, “I wish mine looked more…”.

There was so much negative self-talk.

It was disheartening to hear everyone putting down what they were creating and really… themselves. But that’s what so many of us do, right? What we have, what we do, how we look… It’s never good enough. And we translate that into “I’m not good enough”.

But I’m here to tell you… not only are you enough and you are blessed! Right here, right now, if you have four walls and a roof over your head, you ARE blessed. And your home and what you create doesn’t have to be magazine worthy or like anyone else’s to be beautiful and enjoyable. I want Storypiece to be a space that encourages you to own your unique beauty and creativity…. to believe you CAN and go DO that you are inspired to do.

Design Principles & Trends – With a little know how, you can conquer that design hurdle and create a space you’re excited about. It has always been my heart for Storypiece to inspire others to create a home that reflects their personal story. But sometimes there’s that thing that we’re just not sure about and we need a little sounding board to move forward.

Each week in addition to original crafts, I will be sharing simple and easy to duplicate design principles & trends. It’s not about perfection, but about understanding what you like and how to incorporate that into your home. We’ll look at specific design challenges and explore interesting solutions for a space. We’ll also be discussing what you see in those designer magazines and break it down into something applicable.

And if you are wrestling with a specific obstacle, I invite you to send it in for review. I’d love to help you come up with a space that brings you joy. Drop a question in the comments or email me at danielle@storypiece.net.

Promotions & Home Décor Deals – My mission is to provide you with quick, simple and doable home ideas for any budget. Let’s face it… Making home improvements or investing in décor for your place can be spendy. There are times when it’s better to buy rather than DIY and it’s always a little sweeter when it’s a good deal.

I deeply love getting the perfect thing for our home at a total steal and I can’t wait to pass that savings on to you. However, we will also discuss when passing on a deal that isn’t right for you is equally important to creating a meaningful home.

That’s it in a nutshell…. the direction for Storypiece in 2016. In addition to the creative ideas that you’ve already come to expect, I hope you find more encouragement and solid information for creating a place your adore on any budget.

What goals are you planning for 2016? Do you have a particular design challenge that you are looking to conquer? And lets get real… what do you do when that negative self-talk creeps in?

Let’s make this the year that we believe we are blessed and to live out our story.

Interesting, my husband and I also spent a lot of time making plans for the upcoming year. A lot of our plans and decision making relates to all of the things that still need to be done. Last year our challenge to ourselves was to step out of our comfort zone. We both took some chances and did some different things last year, it was a good, but very busy year. This year we are taking some things off of our plates, simplifying some.

I liked reading about your plans for 2016 and how you talk about finding the perfect thing at a great price. We have found some perfect things, mostly not at a great price, but instead we are just really taking our time. We moved in last Memorial Day weekend, and today we finally received our sofas!

I still struggle with my blog being “good enough”. I know what you mean about allowing that feeling become about oneself. I had a few of those days myself this past week. I reminded myself that keeping positive is what brings positive things to your life, picked myself up and have moved on!

Here’s to a fabulous 2016! For you and for me!!

Yay for the sofas!! I can’t wait to see them make an appearance on your blog.

And I wish I could say that I haven’t been there with my blog, but I think I’ve experienced that “not good enough” struggle in every aspect of my life… in one form or another. It’s amazing how it creeps in and takes hold. But your blog is so great and I love what you bring to the table… both the designed table and the internet table. You keep doing you… you are fabulous, my friend!

Those are wonderful goals for your blog. There is a lot of negative self-talk, and it’s great that you are working to fight against it. Sometime a little encouragement is all we need to create something great.

I can’t wait to read your ideas on design principles and trends. You definitely have a good eye and an artistic perspective for design. And I love your business cards!
