Favorite Find Link Party – Mad Men Edition

Welcome to my first ever Link Party!  Grab a drink and let’s mingle.

I’ve titled this the Mad Men Edition in honor of the season 6 premiere.  Did you see it? Tyson and I are huge fans of the show, but we’ve been watching it all through Netflix.  We got completely caught up Saturday night, just in time for the Sunday evening premiere.  But to avoid any spoilers let’s keep moving along.

This post also comes with the special edition title, since the Link Party was inspired by my friend, Victoria.  She has personal connections with Don Draper and friends through her brilliant use of photoshop.  If you are a fan of the show you should check out her posts here and my personal favorite here.  I think SCDP would be proud.

And finally, I’m giving a shout out to the retro show because of my Favorite Find.  As much as I enjoy (most of) the characters and the interesting ad campaigns, I most watch because I LOVE the style and decor.  I’ve shared openly that mid-century design is one of my favorites and the show is full of it.  Some time during Season 2, I started yelling at the screen, “My chair! There’s my chair!” while we watched Betty Draper enjoy an afternoon bender.

Mad Men Season 2 Ep 9

Seriously, I sometimes pay more attention to the sets than the storyline.

A while back, during some spring cleaning, Tyson made a run to donate some items to Goodwill.  When he returned, he casually mentioned that he had seen a really cool chair that I would’ve loved.  What do you mean “would’ve”?  That is all it took for me to want to check out this chair for myself.

Retro Chair

My man knows me so well.  It is an amazing piece and had loads of potential.  For a few bucks it came home with me and has been greatly enjoyed.

MidCentury Modern Armchair

Now, I’m honestly not sure what period this chair is from.  This isn’t exactly the chair that we saw on Mad Men, but it’s similar.  The tag on it says that it is manufactured by Stanley Furniture and I’ve searched high and low to get more information on it.  Regardless, it’s definitely unique and I’m so glad it’s ours.

Backside of MidCentury Chair

One of my favorite things is the decorative iron detail on the sides.

Decorative Iron Chair

I love the nailhead finish on the arms too.

Detail of Retro Armchair

One of my least favorite accessories was the kids bed pillow that was stuffed between the webbing and the cushion to keep the seat from falling in.  Creepy. Needless to say… that was removed before the piece came into the studio.

Sagging Seat Bottom

Now, for this next part you need to know two things:

  1. This chair is not a recent Favorite Find.  We rescued it before I had a blog, but I’ve never shared the story before today. (The photos are pre-blog quality too.)
  2. Had I been blogging, I would’ve known more people to talk to about updating it. Because folks… I painted this bad boy.

That’s right… The wood stained arms and legs got a coat of black paint.

Updated Goodwill Find

As much as I love the look and continue to enjoy the choice that we made, I now wonder if I would’ve opted to re-stain these areas instead of using paint.

Ironside Detail

In overhauling the piece, I also gave the seat a new cushion, reinforced the seat and updated the fabric.

Retro ArmChair

I picked a light blue and brown damask to go in our family room.

Brown and Blue Damask Fabric

But the chair has made a permanent home in the studio lounge.

I replaced the nail head trim too.  I went with a more decorative design that compliments the fabric.

Furniture Bling

There may or may not be a drill bit that snapped off and is permanently embedded in the arm.  But just like Don Draper’s escapades, that’ll be our little secret.

Mad Men Style Armchair

So there it is… one of my all time Favorite Finds.

I tell you… I almost had a morning bender myself… I THOUGHT I had this all under control… and yet at 9:59, I was still running around like a crazy person. If this were a real party, smoke would have been billowing out of the oven… my curlers would still be in… I would have been screaming at Don… and he really hates when I get shrill.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE your chair… and anything else that might have come from a Mad Men set. Maybe in my next house I’ll trade in the Victorian stuff and go mod.

Alright… time to go mingle with my guests.

Thank you much! I’ve never seen a piece like this and I’m so glad it’s ours. It’s no portal to Downton Abbey, but it does make you want to sit back and listen to Sinatra with a martini in hand.

  2. Kristen @ Inspired Whims says:

I ADORE that chair, like crazy! Chairs are always my weak spot…I see a cool one and just have to have it, even if I don’t have a place for it. Good thing they fit in the garage if they don’t make it into the house (quite yet).

    • admin says:

I think I have that same problem. I think coats are my wardrobe weak spot, but I recently noticed that I have two chairs that I really have no use for. I just love them so.

Thanks for sharing your Favorite Find. It looks like a good one. Off to go check it out now. 🙂

  3. Tammi@1914house says:

I like the black paint! Your husband knows you pretty well, huh 🙂 This link party is fun – will there be more? I felt like didn’t have anything quite right for it, even though I’ve been considering it since last week. Maybe next time!

    • admin says:

Thanks, Tammi. I’m definitely planning on doing this again. I’m not sure when, but I’d love for you to be a part of it. The party will be open until next Tuesday so if something comes up feel free to jump in. I think your Cow Skull post would be perfect for this too… talk about a fun find!

  4. Megan says:

Visiting from decor and the dog! I love, love your chair! So cool! I have to admit, I have never seen Mad Men- I know! So many people love it. One day I will have to go back and catch up on Netflix. Love your blog!

    • admin says:

Thanks, Megan! Fair warning, if you decide to check out the show… some of the episodes are DARK. But as for the sets and design; total eye candy! Thanks for stopping by.

  5. Stacey says:

Great chair, Danielle! Love how you totally transformed it. You know I love to refinish and stain stuff but I think painting it black was actually a much better choice. It looks so classy! Good find and I’m seriously impressed that you actually had pictures (pre-blog). I don’t think I have ANY pictures pre-blog … of ANYTHING! Ha Ha Ha!
Hope I can participate in the next party. Now that I’ve figured out how it all works!

    • admin says:

Thanks! It’s seriously one of my very favorite finds ever. It’s just so unique and I haven’t been able to find any more information on it which is driving me little crazy. I do love the black, but staining wood is opening a whole new world. Tyson is looking to do some doors in his studio and I’m like “YES!”

Come to the next party, for sure. You and Richie always find the coolest stuff!

  6. Anne {Almost Home} says:

Hi, Cameron Stimson introduced me to your blog. I too love a good furniture transformation! I also love Mad Men–and really appreciated that you didn’t let out any spoilers 🙂 My husband and I have also watched all the previous seasons via Netflix. We decided to wait and start this season when we can watch it without interruptions (of the commercial or child type!)–tough decision because I’m dying to watch!!! 🙂 Thanks for hosting the link party!

    • admin says:

Thank you so much for linking up! I adore Cameron and it’s so fun to virtually meet you. I’m kind of wishing we were waiting to watch the whole season at once. There’s something wonderful about jumping right back into the next episode. It’s taking FOREVER for Sunday to get here.

Thanks for dropping by. I’m off to check out your chairs. 🙂

  7. ScrapAndSalvage says:

WOWIE WOW! i am totally surprised at how much i love your refurbish project! if you had described it to me i would have recoiled and shrieked “don’t wreck it!!”. but, not only did you not wreck it, it looks STUNNING! way to go, danielle!! you did a kick ass job!!

    • admin says:

I have to tell you I’ve been going back and forth on talking about this chair for a while now. I’ve been wanting to share it, but both you and Stacey are so, SO good at finding vintage pieces and incorporating them into your homes in their natural/intended state. I guess I’m learning that not everything in my life needs a coat of paint. 🙂 I love the black and don’t regret it, but now that I’ve met you both, I wonder how I would handle updating it now. Thank you for being so encouraging. It means a lot.

      • ScrapAndSalvage says:

ha! you just paid me about ten compliments when i was trying to compliment YOU! you are adorable and i am flattered. your love for this chair told you exactly what to do and it really looks fantastic. you inspire me! and, we both share a love for chairs!
plus i want that embroidered on a pillow now: “not everything in my life needs a coat of paint.” you could make some serious cash 😉 xoxox can’t wait for your next post, as always.

  8. Alex @ northstory says:

HOW DID I MISS MY ENTRY IN THIS??? Omg. Hangs head in shame. I am obviously a dunce b/c I linked up over at Victoria’s and didn’t even clue in that I hadn’t done it here. Just shoot me. Unfriend anytime.

That’s a LOT of great craftmanship you did to that chair. The details, the rivets. Beautiful!
